Moving to a new home is always exciting. However, packing your old things up for your move can be quite a chore. It takes time and a lot of effort to do an efficient job.

To make things easier, packing must be done a few weeks before the actual moving date. This way, you can be sure you don't leave anything valuable behind.

Getting a list together of packing supplies is a good beginning. You will need boxes in various sizes, suitcases, tape, bags and packing material for your dishes and fragile items. You can make one major shopping trip to get your supplies or buy it slowly over time to spread out the cost.

Tackle your house one room at a time. If you plan to start with the living room, group small objects and pack them together. Large objects like furniture and carpets should be packed last. If you have a lot of books, you can devote an entire box to it. When you're done, label the box accordingly.

It can be beneficial to also consider what you will need as soon as you get into your new home. Things like dish soap, cleaning supplies, paper plates and plastic utensils, and toiletries will be necessary immediately. You will want to pack and label these appropriately to easily locate them once you have arrived.

You may consider packing an essentials box for each person in the family. You could buy new toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels, soaps, and a change of clothes to be packed in the essential box to be utilized on moving day.

Using thick Ziploc bags to pack hardware and large items is helpful. Place these bags in the same box so it will be easier to unpack and rearrange once you have arrived in your new place.

Labeling every box is the key to ensuring smooth unpacking. This will help you find all the important items when you need them and help you to stage your boxes throughout the house to assist with an organized unpacking experience. And don't forget, after all the packing is done, make sure you take a final look throughout the house to make sure you don't leave anything important behind.
